Now that we've been in Bangkok for a few days, I've got a bit more to write about. We're staying on Khao San Road which is the backpackers area. It's completely crazy at all hours of the day and when I get a second I'll post pictures and a video so you can get a feel for it. The street is packed with shops, food stalls, guesthouses, and tuk tuk drivers trying to get you agree to "5 baht 1 hour" which really means they'll drive you around for an hour and stop at a shop they get a commission at. But so far so good. The food stalls are amazing, we've already eaten pad thai 3 times in two days. While we were getting lunch
yesterday a guy dropped a giant bucket of pink paint on the ground, which splashed all over Jamie and Ianne. They were covered in paint and a bunch of Thai people jumped into action, washing Jamie's shoes and trying to scrape the paint off her legs. A friendly Thai gentleman with silver glittery nail polish spent several minutes scraping paint off her legs. It was pretty hilarious for our first day. Also pretty typical that it happened to Jamie.
Later yesterday we went to a great little restaurant on Khao San called Hippie de Bar with Jamie's friend Morgan who is teaching English here. The food was amazing (papaya salad and tom yum gung soup) and Morgan told us all about Bangkok and other places to visit in Thailand. Hope to see you at the full moon party Morgan!
Friday we started the day off at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Both are essential Bangkok
landmarks and are huge temples. Wat Pho has an enormous gold Buddha called the "reclining Buddha". Next we took a boat ride across the river to Wat Arun and walked up the steepest scariest steps I've ever seen! I'm a little rushed right now because we are leaving shortly for Chiang Mai (taking a 12 hour bus) for a trek. Pictures and video to come shortly!
