After a hellish day of travel to Bangkok that consisted of a bumpy, creaky, cramped night bus, then a smaller bus to the border at Poipet, border crossing crap, and a minibus ride, we were absolutely exhausted. One night in Bangkok gave us time to recharge and do a bit of shopping before heading south to Koh Samui. We got on a pretty nice bus that was taking us to Surat Thani, and was supposed to take 12 hours. Instead, they dropped us off in the middle of nowhere at 3:45 am and said that our bus to Surat Thani would arrive at 8am. The travel times here have to be taken with a grain of salt because it's never what they say it will be. But what can you do? We got on a ferry to Koh Samui and finally arrived on the island! Our guesthouse was in the Big Buddha Beach area. It was super nice, but we were the only people under 60 in the area. It's pretty much a retirement community and lots of bars with Thai girls. But the beach was beautiful and peaceful. A little bit boring.
The first day we grabbed a taxi to Lamai beach and stopped to see Grandfather and Grandmother rocks. Grandfather rock looks like a big penis and Grandmother like a vagina. The Thai people love them some penis jokes. Our taxi driver made us lay down so that it looked like Grandfather rock was our penis. Pretty funny. She then took us to Lamai, which was nice, but again was filled with older people. Finally, we headed over to Chaweng Beach, which is where all the younger people hang out. We ended up at Ark Bar for dinner of grilled crab and mussels. Amazing! Our next day on Samui was spent back at Chaweng Beach where we pretty much just laid around and did some swimming. We planned to go to Reggae Bar or see a muay thai fight, but the fights were too expensive and we happened to be there on a Buddhist holiday so all bars were closed.
